Do you have trouble keeping your new year’s resolutions? Give yourself a second chance and experience a different take on the turning of the calendar during Thailand’s traditional New Year’s festival, Songkran. It’s celebrated during the vernal equinox in April, with two days of feasts, religious washing, prayer, and best of all, water fights. Originally intended to wash away sin and bad behavior, but now seen as a way to beat the heat, people soak passersby with everything from garden hoses to water guns. It’s all about starting a fresh, new year with a refreshing spiritual cleanse.
Transport information and advice
Although Thailand now officially recognizes January 1st as New Year’s Day, the Songkran festival continues to take place all over the country in mid-April. All I can say is: Thailand. April. Be there.
