A visit to Newport is not complete without entering into the world of Beechwood, an ornate gathering place for the wealthiest Americans in the late 1800s and home of John Jacob Astor, who perished on the Titanic. As if the mansion’s elaborate décor and charm don’t make it a character in and of itself, the Beechwood Theatre Company truly brings the house back to life by impersonating Astor family, friends, and staff. Unlike any other mansion in Newport, the moment you step through the front door, you become a player in the Living History Tour. A butler greets the tour group, addressing you as VIPs who have come to learn your way around the home before attending tomorrow night’s swanky gathering of millionaires. The tour proceeds from there and never once do the actors break from their roles, even planning “accidental” run-ins with other actors, who take over the tour guide responsibilities. There is real soup brewing in the kitchen and you’ll even be let in on gossip that is known to have spread around the household during the time of year you visit. Nothing about the information you’ll receive is false. Everything, from the sofa’s upholstery to a side comment made about how so-and-so has gained weight since coming back from Europe, are accurate to a time when the Astors’ called Beechwood home.
Transport information and advice
I’ve toured every mansion in Newport and this is by far my favorite (I’ve been on it three times!), but one thing I’m dying to attend is the Beechwood Murder Mystery party. I can’t vouch for it, but if the quality is comparable to the tour, then it’s got to be phenomenal. The Beechwood Theatre Company hosts many other events like An Evening With the Astors, a Christmas Feast, and a New Year’s Eve party.
The mansion is located at 580 Bellevue Avenue. There is a parking lot and they do accommodate large groups. Tours are year-round, usually from about 10am-4pm, and leave every thirty minutes. See the website for exact schedules.
